San Simeon

 

A little bit nerve wracking because it’s September 11th and we keep wondering if the jackasses are going to do something.  So far at least nothing has happened.

 

Breakfast and gas in Buellton.  We can’t figure out why gas in Buellton at two particular gas stations is always significantly cheaper than anywhere else (today $3.89 versus the best price in Santa Barbara of $4.09). Lots of traffic on the road today but nothing compared to the back-up traffic trying to go through Pismo Beach.  Looks like there were some major events downtown and there were people and cars everywhere.  We ended up having to escape back onto the freeway!

 

Stopped in Cambria for a walk about and something to eat.  Not feeling like a big lunch we found a sign advertising cinnamon rolls and of course, went there.  Temperature is lovely and a bit cool.  Lots of fog today which has kept everything nice.

In a hotel tonight as no campgrounds available.  Hotel prices are crazy!

A day of exploring Pacific Grove.  A new spot that we haven't known before even after coming here for 40 years ...  The Kissing Rock The waves were abnormally high today with an expectation of 13 to 17 feet which made driving along the coast quite interesting. As always, you see deer everywhere there is greenery. We discovered the Butterfly house... What a kick!  Has a sign for Hillary for 2016! Of course we had to wander through the cemetery.

Butterfly Grove Inn, Pacific Grove

More new experiences today starting with a drive through Elkhorn Slough.  This is " 7-mile-long tidal slough and estuary on Monterey Bay in Monterey County, California. It is California's second largest estuary and the United States' first estuarine sanctuary." An interesting road to get through the Slough!  The photos below were taken through the window.  Then it was on to Moss Landing Harbor.   This is huge!   By accident we discovered there is a campground in the harbor and it looks pretty good.  If we had known about this yesterday we would have stayed there instead and been happier.  The coastline as we got close to Monterey, as we're flying by at 60 mph. A stop at Monterey Harbor for a walk around, lunch and Norm checking out a boat for sale.  Boy, did we luck out with this hotel!  We're thrilled and will stay here another night and do some exploring.   It's been many years since we were here.  We used to come u...
